About the League

Our Mission: Empowering Voters and Defending Democracy

The League of Women Voters, 100 years strong! We are one of the most respected and effective nonpartisan grassroots organizations in the country. Registering voters, actively promoting unbiased civic education on ballot issues, and hosting candidate forums are fundamental to our history. As an organization, we encourage informed and active participation in government at the national, state and local levels through education and advocacy on issues and policies in the public interest.

Four Things to Know About the League of Women Voters

  1. We are a volunteer organization.
  2. We do advocate for or against public policy, but only after we have thoroughly conducted a formal study of an issue and the membership has reached a consensus position. To learn more about this process, click on our League Positions page.
  3. We are nonpartisan. We do not support or oppose any political party or candidate.
  4. We are an inclusive group that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. We encourage civil discourse regarding diverse ideas and political viewpoints.

Our Roles

The League of Women Voters has two separate and distinct roles:
  • Voter Service and Civic Education: We offer unbiased nonpartisan information about elections, the voting process, and issues. We sponsor nonpartisan candidate debates and forums. Our League publishes a nonpartisan voter guide with information from the websites of the candidates. Volunteers work year-round to register voters.
  • Program, Action and Advocacy: We engage at the local, state, and national levels on governmental activities and legislative issues. Through careful, in-depth, and objective study, we develop League positions. Following the development of a position, we advocate for or against issues and policies in the public interest.
